Why Do I Need A Louisiana Cosmetology License?
Many careers need licenses to do their specific type of work. Why? Well, the government requires them for professions that could affect the safety and well-being of the public. Doctors, architects, electricians, and teachers are all examples of these jobs. Cosmetology is another one of these fields that needs a license. The Louisiana Board of Cosmetology oversees cosmetology licensing in Louisiana. Getting a Louisiana cosmetology license shows you’re dedicated to your profession.
What Does It Take To Get A License?
Every cosmetologist, manicurist, and esthetician must be licensed before they can perform services. A cosmetology license is required to cut, color, and chemically treat hair. To get a cosmetology license, an applicant must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Have a satisfactorily completed 10th grade from an approved high school
- Complete 1,500 hours of curriculum in an approved cosmetology school
- Passage of the required State Board examinations
- Pay the proper fees
How Avery James School of Cosmetology Can Help
Avery James School of Cosmetology is here to help you with that third step. Consequently, we’re on the list of approved cosmetology schools licensed by the state of Louisiana. Our accredited program is designed for the student who is pursuing a 1,500-hour curriculum. Courses cover all the things cosmetologists need to know. Check out our course catalog to learn more about our classes, schedules, and rules and regulations. These concepts include:
- Hairstyling
- Hair Shaping
- Permanent Waving
- Hair Relaxing
- Hair Coloring
- Facial Makeup
- Thermal Heat Processing
But there’s more to being a cosmetology professional than knowing how to do hair. You’ll also need a basic understanding of science, business management, and state law. All of these topics relate to your cosmetology career—learning them will better prepare you for your first job!
You might be wondering what going to cosmetology will be like on a day-to-day basis. At Avery James School of Cosmetology, students enroll throughout the year. This year, new students are starting in February, April, June, August, October, and December. That means no matter when you decide to start, you’re only a few months away (at most) from getting started!
Students have the option of taking their courses full-time or part-time. The full-time program is 30 hours per week for 84 weeks. If your lifestyle doesn’t leave you with that much free time, look into the part-time option. It’s just 15 hours a week for 168 weeks. Over that time, classroom lectures, demonstrations, manikin practice, visual and audio aids, as well as supervised salon experiences, are included.
